Why Custom Domains Are Crucial for SMS Marketing

SMS is the most trusted, most immediate channel marketers have. It's also the channel with the least room for error. There's no subject line to soften a bad first impression, no preview pane, no folder to quietly catch something questionable.

What a recipient sees is the raw text of your message, link included, in full, on a lock screen, usually within minutes. That makes the domain behind your SMS links one of the highest-leverage details in the channel.

SMS runs on trust, and it runs fast

  • 87% of people check a new text within 15 minutes of receiving it, nearly a third check immediately (Omnisend, 2026).

  • A similar share reply to business texts within that same 15-minute window.

  • Roughly 89% of U.S. consumers have opted into business texting at all.

That's an enormous amount of trust concentrated into a short attention window, trust a single suspicious-looking link can undo instantly. Unlike email, SMS puts the full URL directly in the message body. There's nowhere for an unfamiliar domain to hide.

Why carriers scrutinize SMS links more than almost anything else

That same immediacy is what scammers exploit:

  • Text-based scams cost consumers an estimated $470 million in 2024, over five times 2020's losses.

  • SMS accounts for roughly 69% of mobile phishing attempts observed by Zimperium (DeepStrike, 2026).

Carrier firewalls have adapted accordingly. Public link shorteners, the exact tool that makes it easy to disguise a scam link, are now treated as inherently suspicious by default, regardless of who's actually sending the message. This is why the CTIA's Messaging Principles single out embedded links for specific rules.

The character math makes it worse for generic links

SMS's 160-character limit adds a second problem. A long URL loaded with tracking parameters eats into that budget fast, and Bitly's research notes heavily parameterized links "can look suspicious" and read as "impersonal and unprofessional" (Bitly, 2026). Public shorteners fix the character-count problem but reintroduce the trust problem. A branded domain solves both at once.

What "good" looks like in an SMS link

  • Resolves to a domain the recipient could recognize as belonging to the business that texted them

  • Goes directly to its destination, no redirects

  • Short enough to preserve character budget, without relying on a shared shortening service

A link like shop.yourbrand.com/fall-sale hits all three. A link like bit.ly/3xK9z2 hits none of them, regardless of how legitimate the sender is.

The compounding effect across a customer base

For a platform offering SMS to its own customers, every customer sending through a shared domain shares a sender reputation with every other customer on it. One customer's aggressive, high-complaint campaign can degrade deliverability for everyone else on that domain, through no fault of their own.

Giving each customer their own branded domain isolates that risk, so one customer's mistakes don't become every customer's deliverability problem.

This is exactly why any SMS or omnichannel platform should treat a custom domain as mandatory for every customer, not an optional add-on. A customer whose messages get filtered because they're stuck on a shared domain won't blame the domain, they'll blame the platform, and may start looking at alternatives. Mandating a branded domain at onboarding protects both the customer's results and the platform's retention.

A quick checklist for SMS senders

  • Does the domain belong exclusively to your business, or is it shared with other senders?

  • Does the link resolve in a single hop, with no redirects?

  • Would a recipient recognize the domain without clicking through?

  • Is it the same domain you used in the last campaign?

How Entri helps platforms that send SMS on behalf of customers

Entri Connect, part of the Entri Activate suite, makes it trivial for each customer to set up their own branded sending domain, DNS configuration in a couple clicks instead of a support ticket. Entri Sell handles the case where a customer doesn't have a domain yet, letting them purchase one directly inside your platform. The Entri Unify call entri.showUnify(config) presents a centralized modal where the user chooses to buy a new domain or connect an existing one, then routes them through the right Entri flow automatically. When that flow completes, the domain goes from purchased or owned to fully functional inside your platform and your users can start sending sooner. Together, every customer gets an individualized, carrier-compliant sending identity without you building domain infrastructure from scratch.

Give every customer on your platform a domain that gets their messages read, not filtered.
